1. Go back in time at Morewellham Quay

Morewellham Quay is a great place to teach kids about Devon’s industrial past. Located just outside Tavistock, this former mining port offers a hands-on experience with interactive exhibits and restored buildings.

Exploring the mine and visiting the huge soft play are perfect rainy day activities. You can even bring the dog along for an extra £1 entry fee.

2. Go wild at Miners Adventure Play

If you’re visiting Morewellham Quay with primary school aged kids and younger then an hour or two at the Miners Adventure Play is a must.

This indoor play area is perfect place for families with children up to 12-years-old with zones tailored to babies under one, a zone for children under five, and another for kids up to 12. There’s climbing frames, slides, ball activities, battery-operated mini cars and even an outdoor play park for sunny days.

3. Explore Buckland Abbey

Buckland Abbey is a great family day out in Tavistock for those seeking history and country walks.

This 700-year-old house, once home to Sir Francis Drake, has interactive displays, dressing up and beautiful gardens to explore. Don’t miss the Great Barn where there’s often seasonal displays and exhibitions.

Buckland Abbey is also one of several National Trust places in Devon to offer school holiday activities and trails.

The Ox Yard Cafe serves lunch and snacks, and there’s plenty of space on the grounds for picnics.

4. Discover Devon’s industrial heritage at Tavistock Guildhall

Tavistock Guildhall is the best place to discover local heritage. Its small museum showcases the area’s industrial past, from tin-mining to the rise of the railway.

Explore the exhibits and, if you visit in the school holidays, there’s often family-friendly walking tours and events.

A massive bonus is this is one of the free things to do in Tavistock. It’s located in the town centre, so there are plenty of cafes and shops nearby. Paid parking is just a short walk away.

5. Have an outdoor adventure at Tamar Trails Centre

The Tamar Trails Centre is perfect for families who love outdoor adventures. Located just outside Tavistock, it offers mountain biking, hiking, canoeing, archery and a tree top trail.

Tree Surfers is a high ropes course 50ft in the air – something that thrill seeking kids are sure to love.

Visiting with little ones? You can hire tag-alongs as well as bikes for pre-teens and adults.

6. See a film at The Wharf

For a more relaxed activity, take the kids to see a film at The Wharf. This independent cinema in Tavistock shows the latest family films in a cosy and welcoming environment. Tickets are surprisingly affordable too.

One of the unique things to do near Tavistock is visit the small but fact-filled Dartmoor Prison Museum.

Give your family a glimpse into the history of this notorious prison where you can see displays about its history and famous inmates.

10. Enjoy a stroll at The Garden House

Craving some time outdoors in beautiful surroundings? The Garden House has a stunning 10-acre garden for you to explore.

There’s a range of garden styles, from wildflower meadows to tranquil ponds, which kids will love peering in.

Visit in spring and you’ll see thousands of snowdrops. During the school holidays there are are often activity trails.

There’s a lovely cafe on-site where you can grab a bite to eat or even enjoy their afternoon tea. Well behaved dogs can even join you on your day out too!
